With 68,000 inhabitants, “Antigua, Guatemala” means “ancient Guatemala.” Founded on March 10, 1543, Antigua was for more than 200 years the seat of the military governor of the Spanish colony of Guatemala, a large region that included almost all of present-day Central America. In 1773, a series of earthquakes destroyed much of the town. The Spanish Crown ordered the removal of the capital to a safer location, where Guatemala City, the modern capital of Guatemala, now stands.
Antigua is a prized possession of a country that is proud of its impressive past. A beautiful city with cobblestoned streets and an abundance of authentic colonial buildings overlooked by three large volcanoes dominating the horizon. It has been given the rare World Heritage title by UNESCO preserving the charming and unique atmosphere.
